Google Gemini vs. Chat GPT

Google has released "Gemini Advanced," a powerful AI model rivaling OpenAI's GPT-4, marking a significant moment in AI development. With early access and thorough testing, we have been able to play with it under the previous name Bard, and as Gemini, the current name. It is important to note that we have been spoiled by all the AI releases during the past year and this one, although quite amazing, is not surprising anyone. We noticed Gemini's enhanced image creation and search capabilities, but we still get the inconsistency and propensity for "hallucinations" as GPT-4.

ChatGPT is simple and to the point. Gemini gives longer and deeper answers to simple questions.

Gemini distinguishes itself with a user-friendly interface and a slightly different personality, aiming for helpfulness, which sometimes overshadows the learning process. It demonstrates Google's vision of an integrated AI assistant, superiorly connecting to Google's ecosystem for practical tasks, suggesting a move towards more autonomous, personalized AI services. Despite some limitations, Gemini Advanced ($20 per month) signals a competitive AI landscape, where models not only replicate human-like interactions but also embody a "spark" of seeming intelligence, hinting at emergent properties of large-scale AI systems. This release suggests the ongoing and rapid evolution of AI technologies, with both Google and OpenAI pushing the boundaries of what's possible with large language models.

Both can search for the latest info and data. Gemini organizes the output better.

  • Both models have strengths and weaknesses:

    • Gemini: Better at explanations, integrates images and search, prone to "wordplay" and helpfulness.

    • GPT-4: More sophisticated with code, excels at verbal tasks, less biased towards assistance.

  • Both LLMs exhibit "ghosts"—unexpected moments of seeming intelligence and sentience despite not being sentient.

  • Gemini Advanced sheds light on potential future AI applications:

    • Powerful personal assistant integrated with various tools and services.

    • Capable of acting on the user's behalf for tasks like email management and trip planning.

AI Glasses are the new Cell phones, Brilliant Labs knows it.

Brilliant Labs, based in Singapore, has launched Frame, lightweight AR glasses featuring a multimodal AI assistant, Noa. Supported by an investment from John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, Frame stands out with its ability to process voice commands, visuals, and translations using integrated AI models. Unlike its bulky counterparts, Frame is designed for daily wear, offering functionalities like real-time price checks. Initially reliant on smartphone connectivity, future versions aim to incorporate AI directly. Frame continues the open-source legacy of its predecessor, Monocle, and is priced at $349. Since 2019, Brilliant Labs has raised $6 million, attracting attention with its innovative approach to AR wearables, which will be getting more attention after the release of Apple’s Vision Pro. Wearable AI tech is poised to be the next big thing and become ubiquitous as more companies release devices, tech advances, and prices drop.

Apple keeps Creating and Buying AI Tech

The beta stage needs lots of work. Knowing Apple, they will pull it off.

Apple has launched an open-source AI model named MLLM-Guided Image Editing (MGIE), developed with the University of California, Santa Barbara, enabling users to edit photos via text prompts. This innovative technology allows for various editing tasks such as cropping, resizing, and adjusting brightness, color balance, and contrast, showcasing significant performance improvements over existing methods. Although not yet publicly available, MGIE can be explored on GitHub or through a web demo on Hugging Face. (try it here)

In addition to this development, Apple leads the tech industry in AI startup acquisitions for 2023, having bought 32 startups, surpassing Google, Meta, and Microsoft. This strategic move suggests Apple's intense focus on enhancing its generative AI capabilities, potentially integrating them into future devices and platforms. Despite a slower acquisition pace in 2022, Apple's aggressive strategy in 2023 highlights its commitment to advancing in the generative AI space, aiming to match or exceed the offerings of its competitors.
