85% Use AI in News, But Only Half Feel Ready

A new survey on AI adoption in journalism reveals its striking use and resource disparities. Over 85% of respondents use AI across news production, but only 1/3 have an AI strategy. Financial and technical difficulties remain top challenges. Alarmingly, less than half feel ready to handle AI's ethical implications, like bias. Looking ahead, over 80% of publishers expect AI's role to grow, especially in areas like fact-checking and content automation.

However, nearly 43% emphasized the importance of training for AI literacy. With over 85% experimenting with generative AI, views are split on whether it poses new challenges. As innovations rapidly advance, collaboration and balancing tech with journalism values remain imperative so AI can serve journalism's mission worldwide.

ChatGPT Browses the Internet in real-time.

OpenAI has added a new "Browse with Bing" feature to ChatGPT allowing it to search the web for up-to-date information, citing direct links to authoritative sources. It can also read and analyze images as well as other powerful new features. See below…

This real-time web searching capability is currently only available to paying Plus and Enterprise subscribers, but will roll out to all users soon. While Microsoft's Bing Chat and Google's Bard already offer similar live web results and citations, this move closes a major gap for ChatGPT. Despite some slowness, it works - and being able to verify ChatGPT's claims against original sources is a huge improvement in ensuring accuracy. This web integration addresses a key limitation, though risks like paywalled content scraping remain. Overall, web searching brings ChatGPT one step closer to being an AI assistant grounded in real-time information.

Today we learned that the ambitious project already has a $1 billion investment from Softbank, which owns 90% of ARM and wants the company’s microchips to be used on this device. However, Ive's wariness of unintended consequences poses challenges for such powerful handheld AI. While details remain scarce, the star partnership signals aspirations to bring conversational AI into people's daily lives as seamlessly as smartphones.
