Back to the grind, folks! Just like us, the ports are getting back to work after a recent agreement on automation and other key issues. Technology continues to shake things up both online and offline—Meta has just launched an advanced video generator that's got Hollywood on edge. But all this AI and automation requires immense power. Could nuclear energy be the answer? Let’s dive in…

A breakthrough in life-saving injection technology

Led by rocket scientists, MDs, and top engineers from MIT, Harvard, and NASA, Pirouette is developing life-saving auto-injectors for millions of people facing overdoses or severe allergies.

With growing demand—93% of patients and 70% of prescribers eager to make the switch—Pirouette is ready to make a difference in the $750B injectable market.

Backed by YC and leading VCs like Safar Partners and Gaingels, the company has already raised $6M+ in their latest round and there’s still time to join.

Big Tech Turns to Nuclear.

Big Tech is turning to nuclear energy to power energy-hungry data centers and reduce carbon emissions. Amazon and Microsoft have signed major deals with US nuclear plants, and both Microsoft and Google are eyeing next-gen small modular reactors (SMRs).

  • How Safe Is Nuclear Energy?

Nuclear energy is statistically safer than fossil fuels, with rigorous regulations in place. High-profile incidents such as Three Mile Island and Fukushima have highlighted the risks, but significant advancements in safety protocols have since improved reactor safety. The nuclear industry remains subject to rigorous regulation, making nuclear one of the most heavily scrutinized energy sources.

  • When Will SMRs Be Ready?

SMRs could be ready by the 2030s. These reactors are smaller, cheaper, and more adaptable. Leading companies include TerraPower (co-founded by Bill Gates), NuScale Power, and GE Hitachi.

While hurdles like high costs and public concerns remain, the US projects nuclear capacity could triple by 2050, with Big Tech potentially driving this growth.

AI Video Generators Are Frighteningly Sophisticated.

Meta has announced “Movie Gen", an AI-powered video generator capable of creating high-definition videos from text prompts and editing existing footage, complete with AI-generated audio. The tool can change styles, transitions, or add elements to videos using text commands. While similar to OpenAI's Sora, Movie Gen is not yet publicly available due to high costs and long generation times.

Hollywood should be concerned as AI video tools like Movie Gen advance continue to change the movie industry. Lionsgate has partnered with Runway for AI-assisted video editing, but many AI firms might eventually offer tools directly to the public, democratizing filmmaking. This could lead to a moment similar to music's iTunes revolution, where independent creators bypass traditional gatekeepers to upload films directly to streaming platforms. Additionally deepfakes will become harder to detect.

Some other studios will have to partner with AI companies to survive, shifting the entire paradigm of the industry and giving even more power to tech companies over media. AI's growing role in media has already led to strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA, reflecting fears about the impact on creative jobs. Meta trained Movie Gen on a mix of licensed and public datasets, raising ethical and ownership concerns, but regardless, the rise of AI-generated content could fundamentally shift power from studios to individual creators, reshaping the industry.

Strikes, Automation, and the Future of Global Ports.

Via Reuters.

The U.S. port workers' strike has ended with a tentative wage deal, but the impact lingers, with over 40 ships waiting to unload. The strike disrupted 44 vessels and delayed 120 others, pushing up freight rates by 58% for East Coast routes and 48% for the West Coast. The supply chain effects could persist for weeks, affecting schedules into 2025.

Port automation has become a key topic in negotiations. While unresolved, automation is seen as essential for improving efficiency and reducing future disruptions. If no deal is reached in the next 100 days, another strike could occur, making automation more urgent and likely.
