Airbnb goes all in on AI with $200M Acquisition

Airbnb has strategically acquired the stealthy AI firm Gameplanner.AI for just shy of $200 million, marking its first purchase as a public entity.

The startup, launched by Adam Cheyer, a pioneer behind Siri, is set to fast-track Airbnb's foray into artificial intelligence. This move aligns with CEO Brian Chesky's vision of transforming the platform with generative AI to serve as a personalized travel concierge. This significant acquisition, Airbnb's first since 2019, signals a potential shift in the company's merger and acquisition strategy, possibly increasing its allure on Wall Street given its profitable status and substantial cash reserves.

Weather Apps are very unreliable, Google Deepmid says it has the solution

Google DeepMind's AI, GraphCast, outperforms traditional weather forecasting models, delivering more accurate global predictions from a desktop computer in under a minute. Despite the complexity of weather prediction, this AI model runs thousands of times faster than standard numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems and shows promise in improving forecasts for events like tropical cyclones and extreme temperature shifts. However, as AI models remain experimental and their decision-making processes are not fully transparent, there is caution regarding their reliability and a need to address potential biases. It may take another two to five years before machine learning-based forecasts are widely used in real-world decision-making.

State of the AI Report - Where is AI today?

The latest State of the AI Report by Retool states that in 2023, generative AI, especially ChatGPT, has surged in popularity, yet over half of tech professionals view it as overrated. The use of AI tools like GitHub Copilot is altering tech workflows. Many companies are integrating AI, mainly for internal use, while grappling with model accuracy and data security. OpenAI's models, notably GPT-4, dominate AI development, though customization remains limited. Despite a cautious approach to AI adoption and calls for better governance, there's a trend toward valuing AI proficiency in hiring. The data reflects a survey of tech industry professionals, predominantly from smaller companies.

A survey of 1,500 tech professionals shows mixed AI sentiment:

• AI mainstream with ChatGPT reaching over 100 million weekly active users.

• 51.6% of users deem AI overrated.

• 49.3% expect their jobs to change due to AI.

• 50.7% believe their company's investment in AI is "just right" and 44.9% desire more investment.

• Candidates skilled in AI coding tools are favored, with a 6.7 out of 10 likelihood to be hired.

• 77.1% of companies have started integrating AI.

• 48.9% are at initial or ad-hoc stages.

• 66.2% have internal, and 43.1% have external AI use cases.

• Top concern is model output accuracy (39.4%).

• Data security is a significant issue (33.4%).

• GitHub Copilot used by 30.5%.

• OpenAI models, particularly GPT-4, are preferred for building AI apps (38.2% use GPT-4).

• AI model customization is limited; 48.1% report no customization needed.

• Hugging Face is the leading AI infra tool (25.8%).
