💉 Can AI design a better and more trustworthy COVID-19 treatment? (FoxNews)

Biotech company Insilico Medicine has used AI to design a new oral COVID treatment, ISM3312, which entered Phase 1 clinical trials and has shown effectiveness against all variants in preclinical studies.

As an alternative to Paxlovid, it could provide a more stable, longer-lasting option without undesirable side effects. The drug was generated by Insilico's AI platform identified the coronavirus target and designed molecules to attack it. While promising, experts say more extensive trials and approvals are still needed to confirm ISM3312's efficacy and safety as a treatment. Its development highlights AI's potential to accelerate drug discovery.

According to comments, the general public is very skeptical about the virus coming back and extremely suspicious about AI technology being able to design an effective vaccine which many people did not want in the first place. A very controversial topic that intersects politics, technology, economics, health, and COVID-19 sentiment.

📢 Bridging the Gap: AI Leaders' Existential Warnings vs. Present Bias in AI Research.

A divide is growing between AI leaders warning of existential threats like OpenAI's Altman, and researchers focused on present biases. While some see the hype around AI catastrophe as marketing ploys, others urge more urgency to ensure alignment with human values. Critics contend doomsday scenarios distract from current problems. Bridging this will recognize both camps share deep concerns about AI's impacts.

Yuval Harari, shared with Lex Fridman that the key may be focusing attention on the uniquely human qualities beyond AI's capabilities that remain vital - compassion, introspection, and self-understanding. He fears that AI may one day become conscious but we are far from that day. The issue is if humans start to believe that AI has conscious qualities while all is really doing is regurgitating outputs based on fed data. “AI is unlike any tool in history because it can make decisions independently and create new ideas on its own, but this is different than being conscious.”

Still, the debate continues amid rapid progress, with society struggling to balance enabling AI's benefits with safeguarding human spiritual growth.

🏛️ As AI expands, Government Concerns Exacerbate.

Now, Attorneys general from all 50 states signed a letter urging Congress to create a commission to study the impacts of AI on child exploitation and develop solutions to prevent the creation of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

They point out that AI tools make it easier for bad actors to create realistic deepfakes of child abuse. The AGs want the commission to expand restrictions on CSAM to explicitly cover AI-generated content, emphasizing that child safety should be a priority when evaluating AI risks. This initiative highlights growing concerns about the potential for AI to facilitate child exploitation if not properly regulated.
