Is it Time to Redefine Intelligence?

The Turing Test, a standard for measuring machine intelligence, is being reconsidered in the AI community. Developed by Alan Turing, it assesses if machines can mimic human intelligence. However, advances in AI, especially in sophisticated models like ChatGPT, are challenging its relevance.

Researchers Philip Johnson-Laird and Marco Ragni propose a new test focusing on machine reasoning, more aligned with human cognitive processes. This test evaluates machines on reasoning abilities, self-awareness of reasoning, and neural network analysis, offering a deeper insight into AI intelligence.

While some experts, like Huma Shah, recognize the Turing Test's ongoing relevance in specific domains, the evolving AI landscape suggests a need for more comprehensive and nuanced testing methods. These developments mark a significant shift in how we assess and understand AI intelligence. Alan Turing stated that if you could have a normal conversation with a computer and not tell it was a computer, then it must be just as smart as a human brain. We already have that, but are these AI systems intelligent or just highly capable of analyzing trouts of data and great at spitting out eloquent outputs? If the latter is correct, we will need to redefine intelligence as these systems evolve and we may have to start finding newer forms of intelligence and trains of thought while evolving our consciousness.
