ChatGPT vs. Amazon’s $4B Bet.

Anthropic just announced it raised up to $4 billion from Amazon, making AWS its primary cloud provider for training and deploying future models, despite Google investing $400 million in February and being named Anthropic's "preferred" provider.

This is the latest AI investment from the major cloud providers, but an unusual one since AWS has framed itself as neutral by providing various models, unlike Microsoft which resells OpenAI - so the Anthropic bet may confirm suspicions that AWS is lagging in AI. The deal likely makes Amazon the largest Anthropic shareholder, opening the door for a potential acquisition or profit-sharing, and shows the growing strength of incumbents given the investment needed for large language models. The AI battle increasingly seems to be Microsoft versus others given its OpenAI first-mover advantage, while there's excitement around Google's upcoming Gemini models, contrasting little news about AWS' Titan. This partnership will give AWS a needed boost.

You Can NOW Talk to ChatGPT

OpenAI keeps making ChatGPT better, last week was Dall-3 and now it has added new voice and image capabilities to ChatGPT in a major update. Users can now speak questions and get voice responses from one of five synthetic voices modeled after actors, hope there is no strike due to this. This uses Whisper for speech recognition and a new text-to-speech model. ChatGPT can also now answer questions about images uploaded to the app, leveraging image recognition abilities.

These updates demonstrate OpenAI swiftly spinning cutting-edge AI research into consumer products. However, combining modalities brings risks, like asking how to build bombs from images. OpenAI tried addressing potential misuses but challenges remain around accessibility, cultural perceptions of synthetic voices, and emergent issues from combining models. Overall, the updates make ChatGPT more useful as a one-stop AI assistant while raising new considerations around responsible deployment.

The New “AI Landscape” that solves real problems.

One year after predicting generative AI's impact, Sequoia Capital reflects on its progress. Early "Act 1" apps demonstrated novel technology, but "Act 2" apps are emerging to solve real human problems end-to-end. Killer apps proved a strong product-market fit but challenges remain around retaining users and proving daily value. Despite the hype wearing off, we remain steadfast believers in generative AI's long-term potential. Check the Apps in the above landscapes and check out linkedin for a link to every company.
