OpenAI teams up with the largest Media Companies in the Spanish and French-speaking world.

OpenAI has partnered with Le Monde and Prisa Media to incorporate French and Spanish news content into ChatGPT, enhancing the platform's ability to offer real-time, “authoritative” information. I worked at Prisa for several years as a Radio station producer, they are, by far, the largest media conglomerate in the Spanish-speaking world. They have lots of data in many different formats (audio, video, text), which will enrich the model in Spanish and give it a huge edge. This collaboration, part of OpenAI's commitment to supporting the news industry, brings together Le Monde, France's leading news outlet with over 600,000 subscribers and 2.2 million daily users, and Prisa Media, the largest Hispanic media house with over 7 million daily users.

Through this partnership, ChatGPT users will soon have access to news summaries and direct links to original articles, enabling interactive and insightful engagement with the news. The initiative underscores OpenAI's effort to fuse technology with human expertise to enrich the reader's experience and promote accurate, verified news content. This move not only broadens the reach of Le Monde and Prisa Media's high-quality journalism but also reinforces the role of AI in advancing the distribution and accessibility of reliable information.

Apple is just Getting Started with AI

Apple Inc. has acquired DarwinAI, a Canadian AI startup, as part of its strategic push into generative AI for 2024. This move brings DarwinAI's technology and team, including AI expert Alexander Wong, into Apple's AI division, enhancing Apple's capabilities in efficient on-device AI. The acquisition, valued for DarwinAI's work in visual inspection and optimizing AI systems, positions Apple to enhance its iOS 18 software with generative AI features. Despite past setbacks in the AI space against rivals like Google and Microsoft, Apple aims to reclaim its position with this acquisition and upcoming AI innovations.

AI Models are Vulnerable to hackers, except Google Gemini and GitHub.

Researchers have discovered a method to read encrypted AI-assistant chats with remarkable accuracy, affecting all major AI assistants except Google Gemini.

This attack exploits a side channel in the token-length sequence during real-time responses, allowing hackers to infer the content of private conversations. Despite encryption, the sequential transmission of tokens reveals their length, enabling attackers to reconstruct messages with a 55% success rate for specific topics and perfect word accuracy in 29% of cases. The technique involves analyzing encrypted traffic to deduce the length of each token and using two specially trained large language models (LLMs) to predict the text based on these lengths.

This vulnerability underscores the challenges of securing encrypted AI communications against sophisticated inference attacks. Mitigations like packet padding and batch sending have been proposed, with some platforms already implementing fixes. This breakthrough emphasizes the need for improved security measures in AI assistant technologies.

The GenAI Landscape is Growing too Fast

The landscape of generative AI consumer products has seen rapid expansion since ChatGPT's emergence, introducing thousands of new tools ranging from video generators to virtual companions. A recent analysis, updated six months after an initial review, has shown significant shifts in the popularity and usage of AI-first web and mobile products. Key findings include:

• Over 40% of the companies on the top 50 AI-first web products list are newcomers since the September 2023 analysis.

• ChatGPT dominates with nearly 2 billion monthly web visits, significantly outpacing its closest competitor, now Gemini.

• Mobile AI applications, analyzed separately for the first time, show distinct consumer interaction compared to web products, with ChatGPT leading but by a narrower margin.

• The emergence of new AI product categories, such as music and productivity, indicates broadening applications of generative AI.

• Productivity tools, especially those operating through Google Chrome extensions, are becoming increasingly integrated into workflows to enhance efficiency.

• AI companionship has evolved into a mainstream activity, with marked increases in the number of companion apps and user engagement.

• Mobile AI app trends differ from web, with a focus on general assistants, avatar creation, and educational tools.

• A global spread of AI development, with notable AI mobile apps coming from outside the traditional tech hubs of North America.

This analysis underscores the dynamic growth and evolving landscape of generative AI, highlighting the technology's deepening integration into both professional and personal realms.
