Europe to loosen up its AI regulations

Europe is rolling back parts of the GDPR and the AI Act after years of leading the world in strict tech regulation. Under pressure from Big Tech, the U.S. government, and internal economic concerns, the European Commission is proposing major changes that make it easier for companies to share anonymized data and even use personal data to train AI models under certain conditions. High-risk AI rules from the 2024 AI Act will also be delayed until proper “standards and tools” are available, effectively pushing enforcement back.

The overhaul also targets Europe’s most hated feature: cookie pop-ups. Many “non-risk” cookies would no longer trigger banners, and browser-level controls would replace constant consent windows. Additional changes include simplified AI documentation for small companies, unified cybersecurity reporting, and centralized AI oversight.

Critics say Brussels is “bowing to Big Tech,” warning the move weakens fundamental safeguards. Supporters argue Europe must cut red tape to revive growth and stay competitive as it trails the U.S. and China in AI. The proposal now heads to Parliament, where months of political fighting are expected.

Federal Government Wants Total AI Control

Trump is preparing an executive order that would strip states of the power to regulate AI and give the federal government full control. Critics warn the plan could spark major legal battles, but even the threat of federal lawsuits could chill state-level AI protections.
