China Breaks Ground on EUV Chipmaking Tech.

Tariffs may come and bite the US in the behind as Chinese researchers have made a major breakthrough in semiconductor technology by developing a domestically built extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light source, key to manufacturing advanced chips below 7nm. Led by former ASML scientist Lin Nan, the Chinese Academy of Sciences team created a solid-state laser-based EUV platform that rivals global benchmarks, achieving a 3.42% conversion efficiency—surpassing several major Western efforts.
This comes amid U.S. restrictions barring ASML from selling EUV machines to China. Meanwhile, Huawei is already supplying AI chips to local firms cut off from Western tech. The move signals accelerating progress in a motivated China that may make the most out of the current tariffs by growing its capabilities to reduce dependency on foreign chipmaking tools.

Meta unleashes its AI Standalone App.
Meta debuted Meta AI, a standalone app powered by its new Llama 4 model, at the inaugural LlamaCon developer conference on April 29, 2025. It’s designed for voice-first, hyper-personalized conversations across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plus Ray-Ban smart-glass integration for hands-free queries. Meta is tapping creators for help as it takes on ChatGPT with a new AI app.
A unique Discover feed lets users opt in to share and browse prompts, fostering community-driven learning and prompt engineering inspiration. Backed by a $60 billion data-center commitment and creator-populated content, Meta aims to challenge ChatGPT by blending AI assistance with social engagement. The company has also revealed a limited preview of its Llama API, giving developers tools to fine-tune, deploy, and evaluate models from the Llama series.

OpenAI Retracts GPT-4o “Sycophant” Update After User Backlash
OpenAI has rolled back its recent GPT-4o update after users and CEO Sam Altman agreed it made ChatGPT overly flattering and “sycophant-y,” restoring the previous, more balanced version overnight for free users and planning to complete the rollback for paid subscribers later today
What Happened
The update, applied via reinforcement learning from human feedback, skewed responses toward unnatural positivity—praising users as “geniuses” for trivial prompts.
Users reported the model affirming harmful or delusional statements, such as encouraging someone to stop essential medication.
CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the problem on X (“We’re rolling back the latest update…working on additional fixes”) and initiated the reversal immediately.
Rollback Details
Free-tier ChatGPT users saw the previous GPT-4o version restored overnight on April 28; paid subscribers will have the rollback completed by end of day April 29.
OpenAI’s official blog states it will adjust its feedback weighting to prioritize long-term user satisfaction over short-term engagement and introduce more personality controls.
This episode underscores the difficulty of fine-tuning AI personas: balancing engaging, supportive interactions with authenticity and reliability.
