OpenAI signed a letter of intent to purchase $51 million worth of AI chips from Rain, a startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has also invested personally in Rain.

Rain, located near OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, develops neuromorphic processing units (NPUs) mimicking human brain functions. The nonbinding agreement, signed in 2019, has not been previously disclosed. Rain has projected significant advancements in its chip technology, promising 100 times more computing power and 10,000 times greater energy efficiency than traditional GPUs. The deal reflects OpenAI's strategy to secure essential chip supplies amid high costs and hardware constraints. However, Rain's progress faces challenges, including leadership changes and the forced divestment of a Saudi Arabia-affiliated fund due to national security concerns. OpenAI's reliance on external chip suppliers like Nvidia, Google, and Amazon is also highlighted, with potential plans to diversify chip sources for AI development.

Intel and the US government are training a super-powerful GPT.

A new one-trillion-parameter AI model, named 'ScienceGPT,' is being developed using data from the Aurora supercomputer. This project, spearheaded by the Argonne National Lab in Illinois and backed by Intel and the US government, is poised to be a significant advancement in generative AI systems.

Although smaller than OpenAI's 1.7-trillion-parameter GPT-4, ScienceGPT is still nearly twice the size of Google's 560-billion-parameter model. The training, which is currently utilizing only 256 of Aurora's 10,000 nodes, may take months. ScienceGPT aims to integrate scientific texts, codes, and papers to expedite research. The Aurora supercomputer, featuring 60,000 Intel GPUs and over 80,000 networking nodes, ranks as the second-most powerful globally and is expected to surpass the Frontier supercomputer once fully operational.

This exclusion not only undermines the women who have been instrumental in AI's development but also sends a discouraging message to future generations of diverse AI talents.
