TikTok Sued Over Harm to Teens.

TikTok is in trouble, again. Attorneys general from 14 states have sued TikTok, alleging the platform harms kids' mental health and misleads the public about its safety. The lawsuits accuse TikTok of cultivating social media addiction and using features that keep children engaged, like autoplay and beauty filters, to boost profits. The suits also argue TikTok violated the Childrenā€™s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and state consumer protection laws. TikTok, already facing a potential U.S. ban, denies the claims and asserts its commitment to protecting teens, we shall see.

Cyberattacks on U.S. Infrastructure.

Recent cyberattacks, like the one on American Water, are part of a growing trend targeting critical U.S. infrastructure. This month, American Water had to shut down customer service and billing systems due to unauthorized access. Although water safety was not affected, it shows how vulnerable these systems are.

Here are some major attacks in recent years:

  • Colonial Pipeline (2021): A ransomware attack caused fuel shortages along the East Coast.

  • JBS Meat Processing (2021): A ransomware attack disrupted meat production and led to an $11 million ransom payment.

  • Muleshoe Water Plant (2024): A Russian-linked attack targeted a small Texas water plant near a U.S. Air Force base.

  • Port of Houston (2021): Hackers attempted to breach systems at one of the busiest U.S. ports, but the attack was blocked.

These incidents show that cyber threats are becoming more frequent and dangerous as more infrastructure moves online. To protect these systems, we need strong cybersecurity measures, including better standards like NIST for access control and threat detection, network segmentation to keep critical systems separate, regular security audits to find and fix vulnerabilities, employee training to recognize threats like phishing, effective incident response plans, and collaboration with government agencies like DHS to share threat intelligence and strengthen defenses.

As we rely more on digital systems, itā€™s critical to stay proactive about cybersecurity to keep the infrastructure safe.

Hearst Partners with OpenAI to integrate Content.

OpenAI has partnered with Hearst to integrate content from over 40 newspapers and 20 magazines, like Esquire and Cosmopolitan, into its AI products, including ChatGPT. Similar to deals with CondƩ Nast and Dotdash Meredith, the collaboration ensures Hearst content is used with proper citations and links. Hearst is expected to receive compensation and credits to use OpenAI's technology. This deal represents a shift towards providing vetted information for AI tools, using a method called Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG): A technique for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of generative AI models with facts fetched from external sources.
