Artists can use poisoning tools to confuse AI scraping

Researchers have developed an AI "poison pill" called Nightshade that lets artists imperceptibly alter artworks to thwart unauthorized use by AI models, without needing to resort to lawsuits.

It works by tricking models during training into miscategorizing images, rendering them useless. Though it only affects new models and risks escalation, Nightshade represents creators' efforts to impose costs on unethical AI firms to push for proper licensing, as the rapid growth of generative models threatens artists' ability to control their work.

OpenAI is assembling a team to study “catastrophic” risks.

OpenAI is emphasizing its commitment to AI safety and preparedness against catastrophic risks. Recognizing the potential benefits and dangers of frontier AI models, which surpass current advanced AI capabilities, OpenAI is addressing questions about the potential misuse and monitoring of these systems.

Key Highlights:

  1. In July, OpenAI and other major AI labs, committed to boosting safety and trust.

  2. Concerns include the potential misuse of frontier AI and protection measures against their dangerous capabilities.

  3. OpenAI's new team named 'Preparedness', will focus on capability assessment, evaluation, and threat predictions of frontier models.

  4. The team will address risks like individual persuasion, cybersecurity, CBRN threats, and autonomous replication and adaptation.

  5. They will implement a Risk-Informed Development Policy (RDP) for accountability, oversight, and risk mitigation in the AI development process.

  6. OpenAI is recruiting diverse technical talent for the Preparedness team.

  7. The AI Preparedness Challenge is launched to pinpoint areas of concern and recruit talent. The top 10 submissions can win up to $25,000 in API credits.

This initiative by OpenAI aims to ensure AI models' safe and beneficial evolution while actively preparing for potential risks.

Amazon Unleashes More AI-Powered Tools to Supercharge Sellers.

In September, Amazon unveiled a suite of AI tools to assist product sellers with tasks like crafting product descriptions, creating listings, generating spreadsheets, adding image captions, and even generating content like essays and presentations.

Now, Amazon is taking it a step further by introducing a new set of generative AI tools tailored for improved product marketing. These tools create lifestyle images that can boost click-through rates by up to 40%. They are designed to cater to advertisers of all sizes, eliminating the need for design expertise and mitigating potential issues associated with machine-generated text.

Amazon's adoption of generative AI is part of its broader strategy to simplify the process of creating compelling product descriptions, titles, and listing details for sellers. Additionally, it aims to enhance the overall marketing experience for its clients, ultimately striving to improve the satisfaction of both sellers and customers.
