Tech Companies Take Steps to Avoid Election Manipulation

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and Dall-E, has restricted the use of its AI tools for political activities during the 2024 elections. This decision comes amid fears that AI could be misused to spread misinformation and influence voters.

Specifically, OpenAI prohibits the use of its tools for political campaigning, lobbying, impersonating candidates or government entities, and creating discouraging messages about voting. To combat misinformation, OpenAI plans to embed details in images generated by Dall-E to trace their origin and provide links and attributions to news reports in generated texts to verify their reliability. These measures are part of a broader trend among AI companies globally, with Google and Meta Platforms also implementing restrictions. U.S. politicians remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these measures in controlling AI's influence in politics.

Should Sharing AI-Generated Intimate Images Be a Federal Crime?

The "Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act" is a proposed federal law to criminalize the sharing of digitally altered nude images without consent. This bipartisan bill, reintroduced by Rep. Joseph Morelle (D., N.Y.) with co-sponsor Rep. Tom Kean (R., N.J.), responds to incidents like the one at Westfield High School in New Jersey, where boys shared AI-generated nude images of female classmates.

The bill follows increased concerns over the ease of creating and distributing fake sexual images with AI tools. Although some states have laws against such practices, federal legislation is still catching up. In addition to criminalizing the act, the proposed law would allow victims to sue offenders in civil court. The bill aims to protect individuals' rights and address the growing issue of nonconsensual digital manipulation.
