⏳ "Google Catching Up in Generative AI: Unveils New Models and APIs"

Google has rolled out access to several generative AI models and APIs, aiming to catch up with competitors in the field. After being considered a laggard in generative AI, Google's CEO issued a directive to address the issue, announcing over 20 new generative AI products for 2023. The company has now made API access to foundational models available through the Vertex AI Model Garden, covering text, chat, images, code, and speech recognition.

Additionally, pre-trained APIs for speech-to-text, NLP, translation, and vision are being offered. Google is also working on partnerships with third-party foundation model developers. To facilitate adoption, Google is providing low-code tooling, training materials, and consulting services. The company has highlighted several customers, including GA Telesis, Mayo Clinic, PhotoRoom, and Priceline, who are utilizing generative AI for various applications. While Google still has some catching up to do, these recent developments position the company to compete in the generative AI market.

Silly of us to really think that Google was lagging in the Generative AI space, they were behind in deploying AI tools to the public, but never trailing in the space. Geoff Hinton, one of the top brains in the AI space was developing at Google AI for 10 years, let’s not forget Blake Lemoine, who was forced to leave Google after his post titled "Is LaMDA Sentient," and today we wondered if he was really hallucinating or AGi is closer than we think. Google has the most amount of data by far and they have been using it to train their LLMs, not deploying does not mean being behind in developing it.

🎒 New A.I. Chatbot Tutors Could Upend Student Learning (link)

Innovative AI chatbot tutors are being introduced in schools, with Khanmigo being one of the experimental bots developed by Khan Academy. These chatbots aim to provide personalized academic support to students and have the potential to revolutionize classroom learning.

While they can help self-directed students learn at their own pace and explore subjects of interest, concerns exist regarding potential errors, cheating, biases, and the role of teachers. Khan Academy hopes to make the tutoring bot widely available in schools, aiming to democratize access to individualized tutoring. However, the ability of chatbots to provide empathetic support like human tutors is still uncertain. The use of these bots is an ongoing learning process for both students and the technology itself.

🎶 MusicGEN: Meta’s open-source text-to-music model is insanely good. (link)

While we are on the topic of catching up, Facebook has forgotten about the Metaverse and is tackling anything AI. Mark Zuckerberg discussed his goals with open-sourcing significant expensive AI tools during a podcast (link below).

Meta just released MucicGEN and an open source text-to-music model that can generate music based on specific conditions.

It uses a single model that can understand and create music in a compressed form. This system generates high-quality music samples while considering written descriptions or specific melodic features. It outperformed other systems in tests.
