Microsoft to debut their own AI Chips

On Friday, October 6th, we reported on how OpenAI is discussing plans to make their own AI Chips to combat the shortage of the coveted microprocessors and circumvent Nvidia’s monopoly.

Recently, Microsoft announced that it may debut its first AI chip at Ignite 2023 to mitigate cost. This chip is expected to find applications in Microsoft's data center servers and power AI features in its productivity apps. The move comes as NVIDIA grapples with a shortage in GPU supply. Microsoft's decision to develop its own AI chip also positions the company to compete more effectively with tech giants like Amazon and Google, which already use their AI chips. While this strategy shows promise, it also entails substantial challenges and an investment that may take time to yield results.

Microsoft's $10B investment in OpenAI could indeed pose conflicts of interest if both companies decide to develop their own AI chips.
