Is This the Ultimate Test for AI Intelligence?

Researchers Struggle to Create AI-Proof Tests as Models Like OpenAI and Google Gemini Advance.

The Center for AI Safety and Scale AI have developed Humanityā€™s Last Exam, a new test designed to measure AI intelligence and potentially serve as a litmus test for reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI). This rigorous exam includes 3,000 multiple-choice and short-answer questions spanning fields like analytic philosophy and rocket engineering, submitted and refined by top experts. AI systems' performance on these questions is viewed as a bellwether for AGI.

Testing AI has evolved from SAT-style exams to Ph.D.-level challenges, but even the best models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic failed this latest test. OpenAIā€™s o1 model scored the highest at just 8.3%. Researchers expect rapid improvement, with scores potentially exceeding 50% by year-end. While AI continues to excel in specialized tasks, its struggles with basic reasoning highlight the importance of human adaptability and common sense in a rapidly advancing landscape.

What Is OpenAI's New Web-Browsing Agent?

Operator is OpenAIā€™s latest innovation, designed to perform web-based tasks for users through its own browser. Currently available as a research preview for Pro users in the U.S. with plans to roll it out to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, bringing seamless task execution to ChatGPT. Operator leverages advanced AI capabilities to handle repetitive browser tasks, saving time and enhancing digital workflows.

What is Operator?

  • AI Agent for the Web: Operator uses a new model called the Computer-Using Agent (CUA), which combines GPT-4ā€™s vision and reasoning to interact with browser GUIs. It can type, click, scroll, and self-correct when facing challenges. CUA in the API: Developers will soon be able to build their own agents using CUA.

  • Capabilities: Tasks include filling forms, booking travel, ordering groceries, and even creating custom workflows like restocking items or booking reservations.

  • Applications: Operator collaborates with platforms like Instacart, Uber, and DoorDash to streamline user and business workflows. Itā€™s also being piloted in public-sector projects like making city services more accessible.

Safety and Privacy Features

  1. User Control: Operator requests input for sensitive actions like logging in or finalizing payments.

  2. Task Safeguards: It avoids high-stakes actions, requires confirmation for major tasks, and closely supervises actions on sensitive websites.

  3. Data Privacy: Users can opt out of data sharing for training, delete browsing data, and monitor Operatorā€™s behavior to prevent misuse.

  4. Adversarial Protections: Operator detects malicious attempts like hidden prompts or phishing and can pause tasks if needed.

Make sure you donā€™t provide sensitive information or data to your operators. Also keep in mind that besides the risks of exposing your sensitive data, OpenAI and tech companies will keep and use your data to further their models.

Current Limitations

  • Early Development: Operator may struggle with complex tasks (e.g., creating slideshows) and is still learning.

The goal of this it transforms AI from a passive tool to an active assistant, simplifying everyday tasks and enabling businesses to deliver innovative customer experiences, tread carefully.
