Will We Have an AI Device Soon?

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive are collaborating on a new AI device, with investor Laurene Powell Jobs (Steve Jobs’s widow) leading the funding. The project, confirmed by Ive in a NYT profile, could deliver AI’s "iPhone moment" due to the pedigree of those involved. While details on the device remain unclear, it’s expected to feature a touchscreen and could become a must-have alongside smartphones. With nearly $1 billion raised and a team of 10, including ex-iPhone designers, the product is under development but won’t be rushed.

Social Media are the New News Outlets.

Number of Monthly users 2023.

As social media traffic declines for publishers, many are turning to WhatsApp Channels to directly engage with readers. Introduced in late 2023, the feature allows media outlets to share links and headlines with followers. Notable news organizations like CNN, The New York Times, and BBC News have amassed millions of followers. While the traffic generated is still small compared to Facebook and Google, it’s one of the few sources growing.

In 2019, the market of social networking platforms was evaluated at $192.950 billion. The research states that the market doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The market is projected to grow $939.679 billion by 2026.

Over half of Americans (59%) either got their news "sometimes" or "often" from social media. WhatsApp is especially popular outside the U.S., where outlets like Noticias Telemundo have seen substantial growth. Meta sees Channels as a more personal way to share news, with potential future monetization through paid subscriptions.

AI's Energy Demands Complicate Carbon Commitments.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged that the AI boom is making it challenging for the company and for others as well to meet its carbon emissions goal of operating on carbon-free energy by 2030. Speaking at a Carnegie Mellon University event, Pichai explained that the current race to develop AI models, especially with inefficient pre-training, is increasing energy demands. However, he expressed optimism that AI's energy needs will drive more investment in renewable energy in the long term. Google, like its rivals Amazon and Microsoft, is building large-scale data centers that require up to 1 gigawatt of power, over 10 times the size of past facilities.
